World Health Organization Confronts Significant Workforce Reduction After United States Funding Withdrawal

This global public health organization revealed intentions to cut its staff by nearly a quarter – amounting to over two thousand positions – before mid-2026.

Funding Crisis Triggers Substantial Restructuring

This decision comes following the United States, formerly the organization's biggest donor, pulled out funding earlier this year.

The US government had been contributing about eighteen percent of the agency's overall budget, causing a substantial financial gap.

Expected Workforce Cuts

According to internal estimates, the workforce will decrease from 9,401 positions in early 2025 to approximately seven thousand and thirty by June 2026.

This decrease of two thousand three hundred and seventy-one positions includes job cuts, employees retiring, and regular departures.

"The past year has been one of the most difficult in our existence, as we have navigated a painful but essential journey of prioritisation and restructuring," stated the agency's leader.

Budget Gap Persists

The Switzerland-headquartered body now confronts a budget shortfall of 1.06 billion dollars for the upcoming biennium, representing nearly a fourth of its total budget.

This amount marks an improvement from a previous estimated gap of 1.7 billion dollars noted in spring.

Excluded Funding

These financial projections exclude a further 1.1 billion dollars in expected funding from ongoing negotiations with various donors.

The representative for the organization noted that the present unfunded portion of the budget is actually smaller than in previous years, attributing this to multiple factors:

  • A smaller total budget
  • The launch of a fresh donor outreach effort
  • An increase in participating countries' mandatory contributions

The restructuring initiative is currently approaching its completion, allowing the agency to move forward with a renewed structure.
