Major Web Failure Affects Dozens Websites and Mobile Apps

An extensive online disruption has impacted dozens sites and applications globally, and users experiencing issues getting online due to difficulties at Amazon’s cloud computing platform.

The affected services include the social media app Snapchat, Roblox, Signal, and Duolingo, along with several Amazon-owned operations such as its main retail site and the Ring doorbell company.

In the UK, Lloyds bank was impacted along with its branches the bank Halifax and Bank of Scotland, with further notifications of problems accessing the HM Revenue and Customs site on that morning. Furthermore across the UK, several Ring device owners took to online platforms to complain their security devices were malfunctioning.

Solely in the United Kingdom, notifications of issues on specific apps reached the many thousands for every service.

Officials confirmed that the issue started in the east coast of the United States at AWS, a section that supplies essential online infrastructure for many firms, who lease resources on the company's servers. The cloud platform is the most extensive web hosting system.

Shortly after the start of the day (PDT) in the United States (8 in the morning BST), Amazon confirmed “elevated problem frequencies and delays” for AWS services in a area on the eastern US of the US. The ripple effect seemed to disrupt apps around the world, with the outage tracking website showing issues with the same sites in different parts of the world.

Cisco’s Thousand Eyes, a tool that tracks web disruptions, also reported a increase in problems on that morning, including several cases situated in Virginia, the location of Amazon’s US-East-1 region where officials confirmed the problems began.
