Formula 1 driver Liam Lawson revealed he barely escaped a potentially fatal incident during Sunday's Mexican Grand Prix when a pair of track officials darted across the track immediately ahead of his car

The alarming incident took place on the third circuit when safety workers were spotted on the racing surface as Lawson was returning to the race following an quick visit to the pits to swap his broken nose section

Racer's Instant Response

Shortly afterward, the team's competitor Lawson spoke to his team engineer saying: "Is this for real? Could you believe what happened? I nearly... ended their lives"

"I honestly couldn't believe what I was witnessing"

"I rejoined with a brand new hard tyres, and then I got to Turn One and unexpectedly appeared two guys dashing across the track"

"I almost collided with one of them, truthfully, it was incredibly risky"

Safety Concerns Raised

"Obviously there's been a miscommunication somewhere but I've never experienced that before, and I haven't previously witnessed that in the past. It's completely unacceptable"

"We fail to grasp how on a live track track officials can be authorized to just run across the track like that. I don't understand the reason, I'm certain we'll get some sort of explanation, but this must never be repeated"

Governing Body Reviewing

Formula 1's governing body, the FIA, is thoroughly reviewing the events

"Subsequent to a first corner event, race control was informed that wreckage remained on the track at the critical section of that bend" declared the governing body

"In the third rotation, safety personnel were informed and placed on standby to go onto the racing surface and clear the fragments once the entire field had cleared the area"

"The moment it was realized that Lawson had pitted, the orders to send marshals were rescinded and a safety warning flag was raised in that zone"
